Google Science Fair Students Ask "How Healthy Is Zoo Food For Animals?"

COMSTOCK PARK (CBS Detroit) - A science project by a trio of west Michigan students was selected as the only project from Michigan to be selected to receive a "local prize" in the international 2014 Online Google Science Fair.
The Comstock Park High School students entered the competition for children between 13-18 with hypothesis that zoo animals consume twice as many calories as their counterparts in the wild.
According to a YouTube video, and information posted on the Google science website, the students outlined their hypothesis, testing procedure and the results of their testing.
By partnering with Grand Valley State University, and the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids, the students were able to test a variety of biscuits fed to animals.
The students found at certain times, zoo animals consume twice as many calories as those in the wild.
There are 90 regional projects selected to move on in the competition, sponsored by Google, Virgin Galactic, Scientific American, LEGO Education and National Geographic. Winners will be announced in September at Google headquarters.
