Good Samaritans Rescue Women Trapped In Overturned Jeep

DETROIT (WWJ) - Two women were saved by strangers when they became trapped in their SUV after it flipped on the freeway.

Ken Harris told WWJ Newsradio 950's Stephanie Davis the Lodge was icy when he witnessed the accident, Tuesday afternoon, in Detroit.

He, two other men, and two women pulled over and took action.

"I noticed right away that gas was leaking, oil was leaking out of the car — out of the Jeep, actually — onto the freeway," Harris said.

The rescue was a team effort.

"There were some nameless people, some young ladies who ran in; one came in from the back of the Jeep trying to pull out the seat to try to get them out from the back," Harris said.

"We went to lift (one of the victims) — we saw blood, we didn't know where it was coming from — but we were able to lift her," Harris said. "He lifted her to the top and I pulled her out of the Jeep."

The second victim, Harris said, was stuck in her seat belt, but another in the group of good Samaritans was able to climb inside the vehicle to free her.

Harris said it was just instinct that kicked when he saw the Jeep flip, and they all did what he hopes anyone would do.

"This is a proud moment in the city of Detroit when you see that people care for the lives of others," Harris said, "and that's what this is all about."

The two victims were in a bit of shock, Harris said, but they were able to talk. It was unclear how seriously the women were injured.
