Genesee County Advocating For New State Psychiatric Hospital

FLINT (AP) — Genesee County commissioners hope the state chooses their county as the site for a new psychiatric hospital.

The county board passed a resolution Wednesday to work with its delegation to the Michigan Legislature to advocate for the facility.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's administration said in March that it was delaying construction of a new facility in Tuscola County's Caro, 35 miles northeast of Flint. Flint is Genesee's county seat.

Michigan's Health and Human Services department has said the current hospital in Caro has staffing shortages, and psychiatrists from other state hospitals have been pulled in.

Genesee Health Systems business operations vice president Brian Swiecicki said in a release Wednesday that Genesee County has "three in-patient psychiatric hospitals that are able to attract the staff needed to make a state hospital run."
