Gathering At Unity Church Supports Marriage Equality For Gays
WARREN (WWJ) - There was an interfaith gathering Tuesday evening to support marriage equality in Warren at Renaissance Unity Church.
About 80 people were in attendance - gathering in unity and hope that the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, Ohio will uphold federal judges opinion in four states, including Michigan, to overturn bans on gay marriage.
The Rev. Roland Stringfellow of Metropolitan Community Church spoke at the interfaith service.
"At a time when the well-being of many of our families and children are under attack - let us commit ourselves to building a world where all are treated with respect and kindness," said Stringfellow, Tuesday evening.
Mitch Brown of Berkley was among those attending the service on primary election day.
What does he think will happen before the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals?
"I believe that they will uphold the previous decision - but they will put a stay on it immediately and it will go to the Supreme Court,"observed Brown.
Brown married his partner when federal judge Bernard Freedman overturned Michigan's ban on gay marriage.
"We're hoping that it will move on so that we can be recognized by the state of Michigan," said Brian Burnett. "We got married on March 22, in the four-hour window when it was legal. We've been together for 10 years, and we'd like to just be able to be like everybody else."
Brown says he feels for same-sex couples with children over issues of parental rights.
