Frozen Chicken Sold At Meijer, Wal-Mart, Kroger Recalled Due To Salmonella

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - A brand of frozen chicken sold in southeast Michigan has been recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Portland, Maine-based Barber Foods is recalling frozen, raw stuffed chicken products that were distributed to various grocery retailers around the country and in Canada — including Wal-Mart, Kroger and Meijer stores.

An expansion of an earlier recall, this brings the amount of included products to 1,707,494 pounds, with the following additional item: "BARBER FOODS PREMIUM ENTREES BREADED-BONELESS RAW STUFFED CHICKEN BREASTS WITH RIB MEAT KIEV" with use by/sell by date of April 28, 2016, May 20, 2016 and July 21, 2016 and Lot Code number 0950292102, 0950512101, or 0951132202."

The products subject to recall are sold in 2-lb. 4-oz. cardboard boxed containing 6 individually pouched pieces, printed with the establishment number "P-276" inside the USDA mark of inspection, and produced between Feb. 17, 2015 and May 20, 2015.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) says it's aware of "a handful" of Salmonella-related illnesses associated with this product since June, 24.

Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

"Although the products subject to recall may appear to be cooked, these products are in fact uncooked (raw) and should be handled carefully to avoid cross-contamination in the kitchen," the FSIS warned, in a news released. "Particular attention needs to be paid to safely prepare and cook these raw poultry products to a temperature of 165° F checking at the center, the thickest part and the surface of the product."
