Former Detroit Firefighter Gets 3-17 Years In DJ's 2012 Shooting Death
DETROIT (WWJ) - A former Detroit firefighter has been sentenced to jail in the fatal shooting of a disc jockey in December 2012.
Terrill Hardaway was sentenced Monday before Judge Daniel Hathaway to three to 15 years for manslaughter and an additional two years for a felony firearm charge in the death of 41-year-old Tony Jackson.
The charges stem from a shooting that happened Dec. 29, 2012 outside Four Winds Lounge in the 19300 block of Schoolcraft, near the Southfield Freeway and I-96.
Investigators say Hardaway entered the bar around 12:30 a.m. and started a fight with Jackson, who worked as the bar's disc jockey. Security guards took the men outside where the fight continued. At some point, both men pulled handguns and started shooting.
Jackson received multiple gunshots and was pronounced dead at a hospital, while Hardaway received a single shot to the shoulder.
Officials said the argument was apparently over a woman. At earlier court proceedings, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Hardaway came to Four Winds Lounge threatening Jackson on at least two other occasions before the deadly shooting.
Prosecutors took more than a year to bring charges against Hardaway, who had initially been facing second degree murder and life behind bars.
Hardaway has filed a motion for a new trial, which will be heard on Jan. 22.
