Fire Takes Off After Siblings Fall Asleep While Cooking Chicken At 4:30 A.M.

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say a house fire that sent one person to the hospital started after two siblings fell asleep while cooking in the kitchen.

The incident unfolded around 4:30 a.m. Friday at a home on Cameron Street, along I-75 just south of 8 Mile Road in northern Detroit.

Marcus Johnson said he and his sister were inside the house when the fire took off.

"My sister put some chicken on and we ended up falling asleep," Johnson told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "I was supposed to be watching it, but I fell asleep. Good thing my nieces weren't here."

Both Johnson and his sister were able to escape the fire under their own power, but she had to be taken to a hospital with smoke inhalation.  Her current condition is unknown.

Fire crews managed to keep the damage from spreading beyond the kitchen and adjacent area.

The fire briefly caused a gawker delay on the freeway because of the large amount of smoke.

No other injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation.
