Female Metro Detroit High School Wrestler Wins 100 Matches

RIVERVIEW (WWJ) - A Riverview high school senior is basking in a rarefied limelight. She's won 100 wrestling matches in her student career — only the second woman in Michigan to do so.

Marina Goocher's 100 wins were all against male opponents.

"I kinda think it's funny because I walk on the mat and, most of them, you look at their face and they're thinking, 'Oh, this is gonna be an easy win,' and then I beat them and the look on their face is like, 'What just happened?'"

Goocher told WWJ Newsradio 950's Marie Osborne her parents allowed her to start wrestling at age five when she refused to sit still during her brother's wrestling matches.

"Wrestling, it's just the toughest sport out there — physically and mentally, it's the best sport," Goocher said. "I mean, you have to be mentally and physically tough; push through the pain and just...who wants it more, and just strength and endurance and it's just awesome," Goocher said.

She trains seven days a week, while keeping up with her studies as an honors student.

Goocher is bound for the University of Michigan next fall.
