FDA: Mislabeled Heinz Homestyle Gravy Recalled

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - Hundreds of cases of Heinz brand gravy are being voluntarily recalled because they may have been mislabeled.

The FDA says some jars of what, according to the label, appears to be Heinz Pork Gravy might actually be Heinz HomeStyle Bistro Au Jus Gravy —  therefore not labeled as containing milk and soy.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk or soy run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.

About 500 cases of the product are affected by this recall (details below), distributed to retailers in the U.S. only.

The following are included in the recall:

For consumers: Heinz HomeStyle Gravy Pork; individual 12 oz glass jars with "Best By" date 12/28/2017 followed by MU6F04 4Q and a timestamp. Individual package UPC 013000798907.

For retailers:  Heinz HomeStyle Gravy Bistro Au Jus; cases of 12 oz. glass jars with Case Unit BEST BY Code Date MU6F04, Best By 12/28/2017 and case UPC 10013000798508

There have been no consumer complaints or reports of illness related to this issue to date and no other sizes, varieties or code dates of Heinz Gravy other than lose listed below are included in the recall, according to the company.

"We deeply regret this situation and apologize to any consumers we have disappointed," the company said in statement.

Consumers who purchased this product should not eat it but return it to the store of purchase for an exchange or full refund. Consumers who have questions or who want to request a refund by phone can call the company at 1-866-572-3808 Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST.
