Father Of Girl Killed In Detroit Police Raid Gets 40-60 Years For Murder

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The father of 7-year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones, killed in a Detroit Police raid, has been sentenced in the murder of a Detroit teen.

Charles Jones, 28, faces 40-to-60 years in prison for second degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Je-Rean Blake in 2010, and another 10 to 20 years for perjury.

He was accused of providing a gun to Chauncey Owens who was convicted of first degree murder in Blake's death.

Jones' attorney, Leon Weiss, plans to appeal.

"They found him not guilty of the only act the prosecutors said he did to assist the shooter: giving him the gun," Weiss said. "But then they found him guilty of second degree homicide anyway which, again, contradicted itself. So it was a disappointing result."

Jones' daughter, 7-year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones, was shot by a police officer days later as she slept on a couch. Police had stormed the home looking for another suspect in the Blake homicide.  The raid was filmed by a crew for the A&E TV series "The First 48."

Owens was convicted of first-degree murder in Blake's death and earlier sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Meantime, Detroit Police officer Joseph Weekley, who allegedly fired the shot that killed Aiyana, faces a second trial in the girl's death later this year. His first trial ended with a hung jury.

After Aiyana's death, then-Detroit Mayor Dave Bing banned reality TV crews from going out with police.
