1 Killed, 2 Injured When Wrong-Way Driver Strikes Semi-Truck On Ramp To Ambassador Bridge

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police have reopened the ramps from I-75 and I-96 to the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit following a fatal accident involving a wrong-way driver.

Michigan State Police say the incident unfolded just before 4 a.m. Friday on the ramp of southbound I-75 to Vernor Highway, the Ambassador Bridge exit, in Detroit.

According to police, an SUV was heading the wrong way on the I-75 exit ramp to Vernor, in order to re-enter the expressway, when the vehicle slammed head-on into a semi-truck.

The front seat passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and the rear seat passenger were both transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Police say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

The ramps from southbound I-75 and eastbound I-96 to the Ambassador Bridge were closed for several hours as police investigated the scene, but have since reopened.

Note: Police initially said the SUV struck three semi-trucks and that the driver was dead. This story has been updated to included corrected information by police.
