Ex-Convict Sentenced To Life For Bus Stop Killing Of Army Vet
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - An ex-convict who spent 20 years in prison for second-degree murder has been sentenced to life in prison without parole in the fatal shooting of an Army veteran at a Detroit-area bus stop.
The Wayne County prosecutor's office says 50-year-old Malcolm Benson on Thursday was given the mandatory punishment for felony murder.
Benson was accused in September of robbing and killing 59-year-old Stanley Carter, who was waiting for a bus in Highland Park. Benson had released from prison in January 2015.
The shooting happened just after 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015, as Cater was among others waiting for a bus in the 11800 block of Woodward. It's alleged that Benson robbed and fatally shot Carter one time in the chest.
Carter collapsed in a nearby parking lot after the shooting. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Information from the public led police to a Palmer Park-area apartment where Benson was hiding and he was arrested.
According to Michigan Department of Corrections records, Benson pleaded no contest to charge of second degree murder and felony firearm in a case in Wayne County in 1995. He was listed as a parole absconder as of the day of the shooting.
Relatives have said Carter was a former Army Ranger and had a black belt in karate.
