Enjoy The Star Wars Premiere But Don't Wear A Mask At These Theaters

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) The world is waiting for the release of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," the movie some believe will shatter all previous box office records.  Predictions are being bandied about for a $615 million opening weekend.

In Los Angeles, they're already waiting in line for Thursday's 7 p.m. premiere -- in the rain. Some are passing the time with light sabers and C3po look-a-likes, and staying warm in Star Wars onesies.

But at one national theater chain, full costumes aren't welcome.

In a world where there's more than one mass shootings a day, AMC Theatres is warning attendees not to wear a mask or bring a blaster. "AMC's long-standing costume policy prohibits masks, face paint, weapons and items that would make other guests feel uncomfortable or detract from the movie-going experience," the company said in a press release.

"So put on your costume, bring your light saber, turn it off during the movie, and leave the blaster, face paint and Darth Vader mask at home."

The move was criticized by Paul Glantz, CEO of competing chain Emagine, in a Freep.com report. "That's overboard," Glantz said of AMC's policy. "It's reasonably clear that those are toys, as are fake lightsabers. We're not concerned about fake lightsabers and toy blasters."

Notably, Emagine took heat for a policy banning teens from attending movies without an adult companion at their Birmingham, and then Royal Oak, locations. The ACLU objected, calling it discriminatory.

Competitor AMC operates theaters in 34 states. Locally, AMC theaters are in Madison Heights, Southfield, Livonia, Sterling Heights.

Despite the hype and big money predictions, 3.5 million seats remain for opening weekend at AMC Theaters, the company added.
