EMU Tuition Hike Will Cost Students About $1,000 More Per Year

YPSILANTI (WWJ) - A tuition hike has been approved by the Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents -- and its big enough to exceed a state cap.

As a result, EMU in-state undergraduate students will now pay about $1,000 more per year.

University Spokesman Geoff Larcom spoke with WWJ's Jason Scott.

"EMU would have recieved an additional 1.5 percent or one million in preformance funding," said Larcom. " (The) Tuition increase will add 10 million more than EMU would have received under the cap."

He says even with the increase EMU will stay among the most affordable in the state. "We expect to remain 13 out of 15 public universities in the state in terms of accessiblity and affordability."

The state cap is 3.2 percent -- EMU rose rates 7.8 percent. Because of that freshmen students will pay $25 more per credit hour.

It means the cost for an in-state freshman will be $10,417 for the year, not including campus housing. The increase affects other students, too.

Eastern says it may set a record for the number of incoming freshmen. Enrollment also is likely to be higher for transfer students and graduate students choosing the Ypsilanti school.
