Elderly Westland Man Charged With Killing Wife

WESTLAND (WWJ/AP) - A 76-year-old man has been charged with shooting his 72-year-old wife to death inside their metro Detroit home.

Marvin Jones, of Westland, was arraigned Friday on charges of first-degree murder and a felony firearms offense in the death of his wife, Sandra.

Police responded to the couple's home in the 8100 block of Melvin, near Middlebelt Road and Ann Arbor Trail, on Thursday afternoon after being notified by a neighbor that Jones had admitted to shooting his wife in the face. Police arrived on the scene shortly thereafter and found the elderly woman lying on her bed. She was declared dead at the scene.

According to reports, investigators found several rounds that had been fired into walls and floors throughout the house. Officers also removed several guns from the home, where the couple has lived for more than 50 years.

Westland Police Chief Jeff Jedrusik said Jones indicated that he and his wife had an argument prior to the shooting. Neighbors told police that Jones has Alzheimer's disease and might have been confused at the time.

A not guilty plea was entered on Jones' behalf. He was ordered held without bond and is due back in court on March 6.
