Duggan Helps Kick Off Health Care Enrollment Event
DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has helped push enrollment for health coverage through the national Affordable Care Act before Monday's deadline.
He attended a press conference Saturday to kick off a free enrollment assistance event running from noon to 5 p.m. at the Detroit Public Library on Woodward Avenue. U.S. Health and Human Services Region V Director Kathleen Falk also participated.
Duggan says the federal health care law has helped thousands of Detroit residents get quality medical care, many for the first time.
New customers must sign up by Monday if they want their coverage to take effect on Jan. 1. For current customers, it's the deadline to make changes and updates.
"For the uninsured, that means their new coverage — and the peace of mind that comes with it — will start as soon as Jan. 1," said Erin Knott, Get Covered America state director. "For those who are renewing, that means starting the new year with the plan that best fits their needs and budget, and getting the right amount of financial help based on their circumstances."
The open enrollment season for 2015 runs through Feb. 15.
Get Covered America is a national campaign of Enroll America that is focused on educating consumers about the benefits of health insurance coverage and the new health care options that are available under the Affordable Care Act.
U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow was scheduled to attend but couldn't because of legislative commitments in Washington, D.C.
