Driver Killed When Jeep Crashes Into East Side Detroit Home

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say a 61-year-old man was killed after his Jeep crashed into a home on Detroit's east side.

Police say the unfortunate series of events unfolded Tuesday night when the man ran a red light at the corner of Outer Drive and Van Dyke and struck another vehicle. After the collision, the Jeep continued at a high rate of speed down Outer Drive another five blocks before the man lost control and veered into a house.

The man was declared dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released and a cause of death remains under investigation. It's not clear if the man suffered a medical emergency and possibly lost consciousness behind the wheel, or if he was deliberately speeding.

The other driver involved in the initial accident was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The home was occupied at the time of the crash, but no one inside was injured.

An investigation is ongoing.
