Driver Killed After Wrapping Car Around Tree In High-Speed Crash Apparently Fueled By Alcohol

ROSEVILLE (WWJ) - Authorities say a 32-year old man was killed after his car literally wrapped around a tree during a high-speed crash on a residential street in Roseville.

The accident happened around 1: 15 a.m. Thursday on westbound 12 Mile Road between I-94 and Little Mack Avenue.

Police say Shane Caughey was driving more than 70-miles per hour in a 45 MPH zone when he lost control of the vehicle, jumped the curb and slammed into a tree. Caughey was wearing a seatbelt, but had massive injuries and died at the scene

Along with the speed, investigators also say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Mike Campbell described the crash aftermath as horrific, saying the front and back ends of the vehicle were wrapped around and actually on the same side of the tree.

The westbound lanes of 12 Mile Road were closed for about four hours as police investigated the scene, but have since reopened.
