Dole Recalls Bagged Spinach Due To Salmonella Risk

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - Dole Fresh Vegetables is recalling a limited number of cases of bagged spinach due to a possible health risk from Salmonella.

The product being recalled is Dole Spinach coded A27409B & A27409A, with an Enjoy By date of October 15, 2015, and UPC 7143000976. Neither Baby Spinach nor any other Dole bagged salad products are included in the recall.

Dole says test of a random sample, conducted by Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development laboratories yielded a positive result for Salmonella.

The affected spinach was distributed in Michigan and 12 other states, including: Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin. It's sold in various grocery s stores.

Dole, based in Monterey, Calif., said no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled spinach; that the recall is precautionary.

Look out while you're shopping. The company has contacted retailers who, on Wednesday, were still "in the process of confirming" that the recalled product was being removed from shelves.

Consumers who bought the recalled spinach are urged not to eat it, and to throw it away.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in more severe illnesses.
