Detroit TV Reporter Resigns Amid Racial Slur Scandal

DETROIT (WWJ) - On the eve of a major protest in front of Channel 4, a reporter has resigned for making a racial slur in front of a co-worker.

Reporter Lauren Podell has resigned from the TV station after being accused of using a racial slur off-air. Her immediate resignation comes after political consultant Sam Riddle and the Reverend W.J. Rideout called for an apology from the station. The racial slur was allegedly made in front of another station employee, who brought the complaint forward.

In a statement issued through General Manager Marla Drutz, Podell had few words to say.

"During my time at WDIV I have created many friendships that I will continue to cherish," the statement read.

Riddle and Rideout are planning a demonstration in front of the station Thursday to denounce what is being called "systematic racism that flourishes in mainstream media."

The alleged incident occurred more than six months ago, Drutz wrote in an email to Rideout earlier in the week.

"Once it came to the attention of management, I can assure you it was investigated swiftly and thoroughly and appropriate action was taken. This situation was an important moment for reflection, education and change," she wrote. "I want you to know that on a personal note, I am very sorry that this happened. It does not reflect the people and culture of WDIV."

Podell has been with the station since 2007, when she was brought on as a traffic reporter.
