Detroit Teen Arrested For Carjacking With 17-Year-Old Murder Suspect

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police say two teenage carjackers who have been working together are now off the streets of Detroit, but not before one of them allegedly killed a woman.

One of the suspects, 18-year-old Rayvon Smith, was arraigned Friday on charges of carjacking, armed robbery, assault with intent to murder, receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon, and felony firearm. He was ordered jailed on a $500,000 bond.

Police say Smith and his 17-year-old friend, Ralph Marshall, allegedly carjacked a 21-year-old man at gunpoint last Saturday in the 14400 block of Edmore, near 8 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue. The victim in that case was beaten and shot in the stomach, but lived. Two passersby helped him get to a hospital for treatment.

Days later, police say Marshall proved to be even more dangerous when he shot a woman in the head during an attempted carjacking. According to police, 43-year-old Erica Garner was waiting in her car for her 11-year-old son to finish basketball practice, near 8 Mile and Ryan roads, when Marshall approached her vehicle. Garner tried to speed off, police said, but was fatally shot through her driver's side window.

Marshall fled the scene after the killing but was later arrested. He's currently behind bars and is due in court next week on the same charges as Smith, in addition to charges of felony murder, attempted carjacking and felony firearm in connection to Garner's death.

Police have not yet indicated in Smith is suspected of being involved in Garner's death.
