Detroit Schools Again Get Inspector General To Combat Fraud

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Detroit's financially troubled school district has brought back an inspector general to combat fraud and misconduct after a federal investigation into bribery and kickbacks ensnared a dozen principals and an administrator.

Retired federal judge Steven Rhodes signed an order last week re-establishing the Office of the Inspector General, according to The Detroit Free Press. Rhodes' predecessor, emergency manager Darnell Earley, closed the office last year.

Inspector General Bernadette Kakooza will investigate and audit suspected waste, fraud and abuse.

Rhodes was appointed this year to oversee the district, which has been has been under state oversight since 2009. He says "part of the process of a fresh start is cleaning house and taking responsibility for the actions that have led to the insolvency and the other challenges ... and fixing them."
