Detroit Police Still Searching For Gunman In December Shooting That Killed Girl, Injured Another [VIDEO]

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are again issuing a plea to the public to help them catch the gunman who killed a 7-year-old girl and critically injured an 8-year-old girl during a shooting just days after Christmas.

On Sunday, December 27, police were called to a home on Steel Street, off the Lodge Freeway just south of McNichols road, for a "shooting that just happened."

Police arrived on the scene to find that two children -- 7-year-old Chanell Berry and 8-year-old Ellen Gargo -- were struck in the crossfire. Berry's mother drove the little girls to the hospital, but her daughter was dead on arrival. Gargo was rushed into surgery.

The shooting broke out following a holiday party at the home. At some point during the party, police say Sharonda Benson, 23, and a woman known only as Mona got into an argument. One of the women left the home and allegedly threatened to come back and get even. A short time later bullets were flying.

Detectives were able to recover video footage from a home surveillance camera. At approximately 8:14 pm, the video showed a light-colored 2000 Chevy Impala, missing a rear driver side hubcap, traveling south on Steel. The vehicle stops in front of a home when an man exited the vehicle and starts to approach the front door. Police say the man then fired numerous shots into the home before jumping back into the car, which fled south on Steel.

Benson turned herself in following the shooting and was interviewed by police. Another person, a man connected to a fight, was also briefly taken into custody. Both have since been released.

The gunman remains at large.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 313-267-4600 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
