Detroit Police Start Effort To Improve Physical Fitness, Boost Morale

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The Detroit Police Department is kicking off an effort to improve the physical fitness of its officers and staff members.

The "90-Day Weight Loss Challenge" is a collaboration that involves the police department and the Detroit Medical Center.

In a statement, the police department says it will be a first step in a yearlong program that seeks to promote healthy lifestyle choices and boost morale. A kickoff event is planned for Tuesday afternoon.

Detroit Medical Center staff will screen officers and staff members for weight, cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, body-mass index, vision and more. The kickoff also will include personal consultations, presentations and exercise demonstrations.

As the program gears up, DPD staff will form teams that will compete against each other throughout next year to see which precinct can become the healthiest.
