Detroit Police Search For Carjackers Who Stole 3 Vehicles In Less Than 2 Hours

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are on the hunt for a couple of carjackers who targeted at least three people in less than two hours on the city's east side.

Sgt. Michael Woody told WWJ's Laura Bonnell they received a call about the first carjacking around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at a Mobile gas station on Morang Drive and Kelly Road.

"When our units responded to the scene, they had learned that a gentleman approximately 23-years of age had walked into the Mobile gas station and attempted to purchase some gasoline for his vehicle," Woody said. "He walked inside the location and paid for the gas and as he was walking out, two suspects armed with a weapon carjacked him."

The suspects jumped into the man's tan-colored 1998 Cadillac STS and escaped northbound on Morang Drive toward 7 Mile Road.

"Within maybe a half hour or 45 minutes of that incident, a second carjacking occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. at 7 Mile and Chalmers," Woody said.

In that incident, the suspects made off with a teal-colored 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser, but they didn't get very far.

"That vehicle was recovered within a short time of it being taken," Woody said. "It's not clear as to why they dumped it so quickly."

At this point, investigators refocused their efforts back to the stolen Cadillac and the suspects. About 10 minutes later, police received a report about a third carjacking in the area of 7 Mile Road and Hayes Street.

"Taken was a black Jeep Liberty bearing a Michigan license plate 'DCS 6028,'" Woody said.

As police were investigating the scene, they heard about an accident just a few blocks away involving the first stolen vehicle.

"The crew was involved in an accident in the area of Hayes and Glenwood, in which place the 1998 Cadillac was damaged beyond the extent to which it could be driven," Woody said. "So, we have recovered that vehicle as well."

Woody said investigators are now trying to find the remaining stolen vehicle and the suspects.

"What this says to everybody is that what we're really looking for here is the black Jeep Liberty, along with our two suspects. They are to be considered armed and dangerous," he said.

The first suspect is described as a black male with a dark complexion, 19- to 21-years-old and 5'7" tall, wearing a blue University of Michigan hooded-sweatshirt and black jeans. The second suspect is describe as a black male, 19- to 21-years-old, 5'4" and 140 lbs., wearing all dark clothing.

Anyone who thinks they see the stolen vehicle or who may have information about the suspects is urged to immediately contact police at 313-596-1616.
