Detroit Police Officer Injured In Hit-And-Run
DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit police officer is hospitalized, and a suspect is in custody, after a hit and run accident Wednesday on the city's west side.
Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody says the officer was carrying out an investigation in the area of Mansfield and Majestic, near the Southfield Freeway and West Warren, when he was hit by a passing vehicle.
"He was standing in the street when he was conducting an investigation, at which police a green-colored conversion van struck the sergeant, knocking him to the ground," Woody said. "The officer that was with the sergeant picked him up, put him in a squad car, and conveyed him to the hospital."
The accident happened at around 4:40 p.m. Wednesday. Later in the evening, Woody said he wasn't sure about the seriousness of the officer's injuries.
"The sergeant was conscious and alert and was speaking to the officer the entire time, " said Woody. "We are thankful that he's doing OK at this time, but we're still asking for thoughts and prayers to go out to him and his family."
Woody said a female suspect was in custody.
No names have been released.
