Detroit Mayor Wants 8,000 Jobs This Summer For City Youth

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is challenging businesses and foundations to put 8,000 city youth ages 14-24 to work this summer.

The goal announced Tuesday is higher than the goal of 5,000 that Duggan set last summer for the inaugural year of his "Grown Detroit's Young Talent" initiative, which ended up connecting nearly 5,600 young residents with work experiences and job skills.

The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the mayor's office, City Connect Detroit, Detroit Employment Solutions Corp. and others.

The online application process begins Tuesday and the first enrollment fair is this weekend. Details are posted online.
