Detroit Man Sentenced In 8-Year-Old Boy's Hit-And-Run Death

DETROIT (WWJ) - A man who pleaded guilty in the hit-and-run death of an 8-year-old boy whose bike was dragged by an SUV in Detroit will do some time in prison.

Alfonso Butler, 47, of Detroit, has been ordered to serve 14 months to 15 years behind bars.

Police said Butler was speeding on Detroit's west side last September when he hit Darrin Wilhite, who was walking with friends along West Chicago at Abington.

Butler didn't stop at the scene, but kept driving with part of the bike still  stuck to the vehicle's front end.

Butler surrendered to police and confessed the next day. His guilty plea was on charges of failure to stop at the scene of a serious accident and being a habitual offender.

Darrin's step-father, Calais Kimling, called Darrin a good, honest, and respectful kid who loved to ride his bike and play football.
