Detroit Homeowner Injured In Shootout With Burglar

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit woman fought back against an armed suspect who was breaking into her home, receiving a gunshot in the process.

The situation unfolded early Tuesday morning at a home on Collingham Drive, in an east side neighborhood near Gratiot Avenue and 8 Mile Road.

The homeowner told police she grabbed her gun after hearing someone breaking into her home. Police say the woman fired at least one shot at the suspect, who then returned fire -- striking the homeowner in the hand.

The suspect fled the scene before police arrived. It's not yet clear if he was injured in the shootout or if he made away with any of the woman's belongings. Police believe the suspect might have had accomplices waiting outside the home.

The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 313-267-4600.
