Detroit Cops Search For Driver In 'Horrible' Fatal Beating

DETROIT (CBS DETROIT/AP) — Police in Detroit are searching for a man who is a suspect in the fatal beating of a motorist after a car crash on the cities west side.

Chief James Craig says video of the attack early Monday is "horrible." He says it appears that 24-year-old Tyler Wingate died after a kick to the head. The other man left a 2007 Chevrolet Impala at the scene and fled on foot.

Craig says Wingate was "looking forward to living in the city of Detroit, being part of the renaissance." The chief says there's no evidence that Wingate knew his attacker.

A funeral is planned for Friday. Wingate was a popular student and athlete at Berkley High School. White ribbons are tied to trees in Berkley to honor him.

Mayor Dan Terbrack says the death is "heartbreaking."
