'Detroit Coney' A Hit In Kansas City
DETROIT (WWJ) - Three ex-Michiganders living in Missouri are bringing a taste of Detroit to their new home.
Stephanie Tyler, who is originally from Canton, Michigan, moved to Kansas City after losing her job about 10 years ago.
There, she met two other Michiganders who craved the same thing as she did: a good coney dog.
"We couldn't find coneys anywhere," Tyler told WWJ Newsradio 950's Zahra Huber. "You can't find them at all down here. It's a barbecue state completely."
"... Every time we went back to Michigan to visit family, we always gorged ourselves on coneys. We're like, we've gotta start our own," she said.
About a year ago, the three founded the Detroit Coney Food Truck.
"We do an all beef hot dog; we do the beanless chili — so, it's just like back home, topped with mustard and onions, all of that," she said.
Tyler said their coneys are quite popular — especially among those living there who are originally from Michigan, too.
"The reaction from people from Michigan, they're just happy to see it, because you cannot find it here," she said. "And people from here are excited about it ... They're like, 'Oh my God, there really is nothing like this here.'"
