Detroit-Area Toddler Dies Following I-96 Pileup Near Lansing

OKEMOS (AP) - Authorities say a young boy has died following a freeway pileup involving a semi-truck and five other vehicles near Lansing.

The Ingham County sheriff's department says Friday the 17-month-old died. The child's name wasn't immediately released, but WLNS-TV reports the boy's family is from the Detroit area. The sheriff's department says a 5-year-old remains in critical condition.

The Lansing State Journal reports the hospitalized child is a brother of the boy who died.

Authorities have said that about a dozen people were injured in the crash Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 96 near Okemos.

According to investigators, a vehicle rolled over near a rest area. About 20 minutes later, the truck's driver failed to notice the slowing traffic and hit other vehicles in front of the truck.
