Dentist Buying Back Halloween Candy For The Troops

By Edward Cardenas

ST. CLAIR SHORES (CBS Detroit) - A St. Clair Shores dentist hopes children will consider selling part of their Halloween trick-or-treating haul to benefit troops serving overseas.

Dr. Steven Wainess will hold a candy buy back celebration Sunday and will offer children $1 per pound for unopened candy which will be donated to Operation Gratitude, which will then assemble and ship care packages to troops serving overseas.

"We always say 'hey have the candy, eat for a couple of days, gorge out, have a great time then get rid of it," Wainess said. "This is a great way to do it, and the kids are more than happy to bring back the bags. They get so much, they can't eat it anyway."

This will be the fourth Halloween candy buy back event Wainess has hosted, which includes a variety of events in addition to the candy purchase including cider and doughnuts, letter writing stations, visits from service members and veterans, along with a display of military equipment.

"Last year we sent 650 pounds ... which was almost double of what we have been doing," said Wainess. "It saves the kids from eating candy for 17 months after Halloween."

The Halloween candy buy back will be held from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at Wainess' office, 30140 Harper, Suite 100, St. Clair Shores.
