Dearborn Man Ruled Competent For Trial On Torture, Murder Charges In Sister's Death

DEARBORN (WWJ/AP) - A 24-year-old Dearborn man has been ruled competent to stand trial in the slaying of his 30-year-old sister.

Haron R. Elmawri appeared Friday at a competency hearing in Dearborn District Court. He is charged with first-degree murder and torture.

Prosecutors say Asyh Elmawri was strangled and stabbed multiple times last July in her brother's home in the 7500 block of Bingham. Other family members called 911 and Haron Elmawri was arrested at the scene.

Police have said the stabbing was a domestic violence incident that escalated.

Haron Elmawri remains in the Wayne County Jail on a $1 million bond. A preliminary examination is scheduled for Tuesday.
