Through 22 games of the 2015 season, the Tigers are showing they can beat you in any number of ways – with their bats, their pitching, or their defense. And the one constant so far – the Tigers continue to win series. The Tigers came from behind to beat the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon, 10-7 – their 6th series win in seven series this season, and 5th straight against a Central Division opponent.
What started out looking like a pitchers' duel between Shane Greene and Phil Hughes quickly turned into something else in the middle innings: the Tigers fell behind 3-1 in the 4th, tied it at 3-3 in the 5th, fell behind 7-3 in the bottom of the 5th, and then quickly answered back with a power-filled top of the 6th to tie the game, 7-7. Miguel Cabrera led off the inning with his fourth home run – a 432-foot blast into the upper deck in deep left center field. JD Martinez then reached the seats in left to make it 7-5. And with two outs – rookie James McCann circled the bases when his blast to centerfield caromed sharply to right field, hugging the wall…an inside-the-park home run, the first home run of his career tied the game at seven. A misplayed popup by the Twins opened the door for the Tigers to score a run on a two-out single from Andrew Romine (a career-best four hit day) in the 8th. Then, in the 9th, Cabrera blasted his second home run of the day to deep centerfield to provide the Tigers with their final two runs.
The Tigers are now 15-7, 12-3 in the Central Division. A big four game series with the 14-7 Kansas City Royals starts Thursday night in KC.
