Crews Continue Hours-Long Effort To Extinguish Massive Fire At Auto Junk Yard

CANTON TWP. (WWJ) - Crews have been battling a fire at an auto junk yard in Canton Township for more than seven hours, and the flames are still burning.

The fire took off around 2:20 a.m. Thursday at E and M Auto Sales on Morton Taylor Road near Van Born Road.

Canton Township Fire Chief Joshua Meier said more than 150 cars and trucks are involved.

On top of the various flammable auto fluids, the vehicles are stacked up two and three high which is further complicating efforts. Additionally, no fire hydrants are located on the property, so tanker trucks from Van Buren, Superior and Sumpter townships are being used to bring water to the scene.

Just after 9 a.m., Meier said workers were starting to move the vehicles so firefighters can put out hot spots.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
