Tire Warehouse Blaze Sends Black Smoke Into The Air In Westland
WESTLAND (WWJ) - Thick black smoke from a fire at a tire warehouse in Westland could be seen from miles away Friday afternoon.
The blaze broke out late Friday afternoon at a building on Beechwood Street, near Venoy and Ford Road.
Wayne-Westland Fire Battalion Chief Ken Pyle said that the fire likely started at around 2 p.m. Friday.
"We showed up, there was heavy smoke pouring out of the vents," Pyle said. "We started setting up to make an interior attack and then we saw it coming out, flames coming from the roof and we went defensive."
Pyle said the roof collapsed on the building which is owned by the Motorcycle Tire Company. Pyle said brand new tires were housed in the building.
Crews were spraying water and foam on top of the building hours after the blaze started to attempt to put out hot spots.
Fire crews from Inkster and Garden City offered mutual assistance, as well as a special unit from Metro Airport.
Pyle said that no one was in the building when the fire started and there are no injuries. Investigators will continue to work to find out what might have started the fire.
