Christmas Eve Carjacking: Detroit Musician Shot, Killed For Wheel Rims On SUV

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Police say one of two men charged in the fatal Christmas Eve carjacking of a Detroit church musician told investigators he wanted the wheel rims on the victim's Chevy Trailblazer.

The statement was read aloud by an officer during Friday's preliminary examination for 18-year-old Darnell Young and 33-year-old Charles Cox, according to The Detroit News.

Young and Cox are charged with first-degree murder, felony murder, carjacking and armed robbery in the slaying of 33-year-old Anthony Tolson.

"I seen a truck with some wheels that I could sell for $1,200," Young told investigators, according to the statement. "I told him to get out the car. He grabbed the gun; when I yanked back, I shot him."

Young said he pulled Tolson, who was shot three times, out of the vehicle and kicked the man as he was laying on the ground. "Then I hopped in the car and pulled off," he said.

Tolson was heading to his mother's home after a Christmas Eve church service when he picked up a friend and stopped at a liquor store. Tolson stayed out in his car as his friend went inside to make a purchase. Moments later, shots were fired. Tolson's bass guitar and gifts for his three children were inside his SUV, which was stolen.

The hearing is expected to resume Monday.
