Children's Cough Medicine Recalled Due To Overdose Risk

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - Healthcare product company Perrigo is recalling two varieties of its children's cough medicine, sold under multiple brand names, because of a potential overdose risk.

Company officials say some packages of Perrigo's grape and cherry-flavored cough syrup may contain an oral dosing cup with incorrect dosage markings — which could cause parents to give their child too much.

The medicine included in the recall was sold nationwide under a variety of brand names — including Rite-Aid, Dollar General, CVS and Kroger.

The following products are included in the recall:

Perrigo's Chairman and CEO Joseph C. Papa said, to the company's knowledge, no one has been sickened due to the problem.

"There have been no reports of adverse events to Perrigo as a result of the incorrect dosage markings," said Papa, in a statement. "Perrigo is taking this action to maintain the highest possible product quality standards for our retail customers and consumers. We are taking this action because it is the right thing to do."

Perrigo has contacted retailers asking that the products be removed from store shelves.
