Child Critically Hurt In Hit-And-Run Accident On Detroit's West Side

DETROIT (WWJ) - A witness said a little girl was on her way to buy ice cream when she was critically hurt in a hit-and-run accident on Detroit's west side.

It happened before 5 p.m. on Robeson Street near Fenkell and Greenfield.

"We do see multiple Detroit police cruisers on scene, and we have an ice cream truck sitting down in the area, between the taped off area on Robeson Street," reported WWJ's Lance Howard above the scene in Chopper 950.

"So it does appear maybe this child was going to get an ice cream."

Neighbor Johnny Russel said the victim, an 8-year-old girl, had just been playing with his daughter.

She left his home and walked across the street to where an ice cream truck was parked.

"The (Dodge) Charger came through the stop sign doing about 50 miles an hour, hit the little girl behind that black Volkswagen right there, flipped her up," Russel said. "Yeah, he hit the ice cream truck then she flipped over and hit the car right there."

Police said the driver stopped only briefly at the scene and then spend off. Officers were looking for him Monday evening.

The little girl, who was taken away in an ambulance, was reported in what police called "extremely critical condition" later Monday evening.

Her name has not been released.

An investigation continues.
