Child Brings Unloaded Gun To Elementary School Dance

MUNDY TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Officials say a child brought an unloaded handgun to a Flint-area elementary school dance.

No one was injured at the daddy/daughter and mother/son dance at Rankin Elementary in Genesee County's Mundy Township.

Principal Cathy McGilvery told parents in a letter that the Saturday dance was within 15 minutes of ending when a parent informed her that a child was shown what was believed to be a toy gun by a classmate.

An investigation determined the classmate had a real handgun, according to a report in The Flint Journal. McGilvery says the child's family was "both alarmed and cooperative, and left the premises immediately." She says it doesn't appear that the student threatened anyone.

Instead, McGilvery says, it was "a very poor decision" by the student. Police and the school district are investigating.
