Charges Filed Against 5th Grader Who Had Loaded Gun At School With 'Hit List'
TRAVERSE CITY (WWJ/AP) - A fifth-grade student has been charged with bringing a loaded pistol to his middle school in northern Michigan.
Juvenile charges against the 11-year-old were filed in the family division of 13th Circuit Court, The Traverse City Record-Eagle reported.
The boy is facing charges of carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, carrying a concealed weapon and carrying a firearm in a gun-free school zone.
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department said another student at Kingsley Middle School told a teacher the boy had the gun Monday afternoon. No one was hurt.
Authorities say the 11-year-old also had a "hit list" of sorts with classmates' names. The title of the list, found on the back of a homework assignment belonging to the boy, suggested he wanted to harm those named, according to reports. The boy, however, told authorities he didn't intend to harm anyone.
The list was not specific and contained first names only, according to a reports. School officials reportedly contacted parents of the students they believe are on the list.
Authorities say the boy told them he took the .25-caliber pistol from his grandfather's house on Friday. He was carrying it in the waistband of his pants. There was one round in the gun, but it was the wrong size, according to reports.
Undersheriff Nate Alger says the boy will not be arrested. He's currently suspended from school. It hasn't yet been decided if the boy will be expelled.
