Carhartt To Open Retail Store In Midtown Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - The brand has been made in southeast Michigan for 126 years — Dearborn, to be exact. Now Carhartt is now set to open its first retail store in Detroit this spring.
An official announcement is expected Wednesday on the planned location: along Cass Avenue just south of I-94, where a three- story building and parking garage have been leased.
It's the latest in the ongoing retail and entertainment development in the area.
Midtown dwellers like Cindy Bright, a recent Wayne State University graduate, is encouraged by all the development happening there.
"I think it's a good thing," she told WWJ Newsradio 950's Ron Dewey. "I think it's good for, like, Detroit and Wayne State especially — to get more students here."
In his 15 years in Midtown, Garren Hubbard said this is the most sustained development he's seen in the neighborhood."With the M1 Rail coming in, it'll be nice to have destinations all along the track, and, you know, new store there is great."
Hubbard said Carhartt makes sense in Midtown given the growing youth market for such fashions.
"I think it's over in Eastern Market; they have kinda like a design shop over there. And so they're kinda trying to mold their brand into something a little bit more upscale and, you know, fashionable," Hubbard said. "Even if is just work gear, those folks gotta buy stuff, too, so might as well buy it here."
WSU employee David Thomson said he's amazed by this urban evolution.
"It's really exciting to see all this new growth in Detroit, and I'm really excited to see where it goes as well," he said.
The store is expected to open in late May or early June, 2015.
