BP Refinery Leak Spills 500 Gallons Of Crude Into Lake Michigan

WHITING, Ind. (AP)  - An oil spill into Lake Michigan appears to have been contained. A British Petroleum refinery in Whiting, Indiana released 500 gallons of crude Monday night after a leak went undetected.

When the Coast Guard and EPA officials arrived nearly one square mile of water was covered. Some of slick had made its way on shore. BP put out about one thousand feet of boom in order to keep the oil limited to the cove where the refinery is located.

There is no threat to drinking water.

The EPA will oversee the clean-up.
