Body Found Outside Burning Home On Detroit's East Side

DETROIT (WWJ) - Homicide investigators are combing a home on Detroit's east side after a body was found following a fire.

The incident unfolded early Thursday morning at an abandoned home in the 12000 block of Westphalia, between Gratiot Avenue and McNichols Road, in a neighborhood with a mix of overgrown lots and abandoned houses among scattered residences.

Firefighters responding to a fire at the home found a man's body covered with a blanket behind the house.

Police Captain Darwin Roche said it's not clear how long the man's body may have been at the scene. The man, whose identity was not released, was apparently shot to death.

"We can't allow these acts of senseless violence to occur in our community," Roche told WWJ's Ron Dewey. "To the perpetrator of this act, we will find you, we will arrest you and we will bring you to justice."

Anyone with information is urged to contact Detroit police at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
