Boats Crossing The Finish Line In The 91st Running Of Port Huron To Mackinac Island Race
PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) - More than 70 boats have crossed the finish line in the 91st running of the Port Huron to Mackinac Island sailboat race.
About 250 boats started the Bell's Beer Bayview Mackinac Race Saturday and crews continued to race Monday morning.
Race officials say Arete finished first at 12:53 p.m. Sunday. Boats compete on two separate courses, and winners of the race organized by Detroit's Bayview Yacht Club are determined based on a handicapping system.
On Sunday morning, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued a 74-year-old man from a sailboat that was participating in the race after the man lost consciousness. He was listed in stable condition. WSGW-AM and the Times Herald of Port Huron report the boat was about 32 miles from Tawas City.
The first boats typically cross the finish line on Sunday. Winners are determined based on a handicapping system.
The event caps a week of festivities in Port Huron, and thousands of spectators typically watch on shore as the fleet makes its way in a parade to the start.
The Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit organizes the event. This year is the club's 100th anniversary.
