Best Up-And-Coming Local Brands In Detroit

New businesses open and close all the time but which are the ones that are on the rise? Too often a new business will open, and maybe even have moderate success, but then be closed the next week. The brands listed here, however, are very promising. Check this list for the best up-and-coming brands in Detroit.
Bohomodern

The brainchild of Margarita Barry, Bohomodern started with an online store, as well as pop-up stores, but is opening its first brick and mortar store at the end of this year, in the 71 Garfield Building (Midtown.) The business began in 2011 as Barry's vision combining her "love of pattern, her passion for travel, and her pursuit of beauty in accessible, everyday objects, especially objects of the past." Barry provides custom printing of her graphic patterns into home decor and fashion products. The patterns can be mixed and matched as well to create new combinations. Bohomodern will be relaunching its online store this fall.

RepYourCity plans relaunch later this year. The store started online and is now relaunching as a label. The creator Jay Rayford also founded Social Sushi, a sustainable sushi restaurant that will be built in Corktown from shipping containers. Originally, RepYourCity was "a hub for all community activity online and offline," and its goal was to promote offline community engagement, as well as redefining social networking.

Detroit is the New Black opened in the Ima store this past January, but considers itself a "pop-around" rather than a "pop-up" store. Store owner Roslyn Karamoko hopes that it sticks around. The brand started nearly a year ago and originally just sold T-shirts but new items include tote bags, varsity jackets, and jerseys with "1701" on them the year Detroit was founded. Detroit is the New Black also has high-end items and other art gallery-type products like books and jewelry made by local artists. Karamoko moved back to Detroit from the NYC area and hopes to offer a "fresh perspective on a timeless city."

Trish's Garage is a consulting business that helps "young professionals put together a professional and trendy look on a budget." On Trish's site you can find T-shirts and other gifts for sale, as well. The site was started after Trish's own experiences with her first job out of college, where she needed a better wardrobe than what she had her closet, but "nearly went broke" buying new clothes for the job. Check out the Detroit "D" Peplum shirt if you're a Tigers fan, or perhaps the Michigan "Mitten" Wooden Earrings, either for you or for a friend.

Ellis Island Tropical Tea

Ellis Island Tropical Tea can be found in the Southeast Michigan area in almost 30 markets, as well as in Whole Foods in Chicago and in NYC at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The tea itself is a "rich red iced hibiscus tea" that has exotic flavors which come from the blending and infusion of extracts and botanicals like hibiscus, rosehips, and peppermint leaves. It's brewed in Detroit by Ellis Infinity, LLC, and the recipe for the tea was handed down through many generations. The great-grandfather of the company's founder, Nailah Ellis-Brown, was the first to make the recipe.
