Man injured in Ann Arbor house explosion

Police release body cam footage of Ann Arbor home explosion

(CBS DETROIT) - Fire officials are investigating a house explosion in Ann Arbor Monday morning.

The explosion happened at a home on the 700 block of South Seven Street.

Just after 6 a.m. on Feb. 19, Officer Cunningham and Officer Betts were first on scene.

Cunningham safely evacuated nearby homes while Betts located the sole occupant of the house that exploded and brought him to safety.

The 76-year-old man was taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Ann Arbor Fire Chief Mike Kennedy said.

Firefighters were on the scene within minutes, and their quick actions prevented the house on the south side from catching fire.

Community members told CBS News Detroit's Jordan Burrows that the man, their neighbor Tom, is lucky to be alive and say it was a miracle that he made it out of the house with minor injuries.

The Ann Arbor Fire Department determined the source of the explosion was two 20-pound portable propane tanks that were being used for heating.
