Detroit Angels' Night Fire Tally At 28 Over First 24 Hours
DETROIT (AP) - Officials say 28 fires were reported during the first 24 hours of Detroit's annual campaign against arsons.
The mayor's office reports 12 fires at vacant structures between midnight Wednesday and midnight Thursday. Three appear suspicious.
Fires also were reported at 11 occupied structures, one garage and two vehicles. Four of those blazes are suspicious. Two trash fires also were reported.
Sixteen of the 33 fires over the same period last year were suspicious.
More than 3,500 volunteers have signed up to patrol Detroit neighborhoods over the three-day Angels' Night observance. It's a long-running response to what used to be known as Devil's Night, the day before Halloween.
The observance this year runs through Friday.
In 1984, Detroit had more than 800 fires during the period. Last year, 95 were reported.
