Amber Alert Canceled After Baby Girl Found Unharmed
DETROIT (WWJ) - An Amber Alert has been canceled for a 6-month-old Highland Park girl who police say was forcibly taken from her home.
Highland Park Police police said Nevaeh Cantrell-Jones was found unharmed in Southfield, just after 8 a.m. Sunday.
She has been reunited with her mother; and her father — who police say unlawfully took Nevaeh — has been arrested.
Highland Park Police Detective Paul Thomas explained that the ordeal began early in the morning, at around 3:30 a.m.
"It appears to be a parental kidnapping, along with a home invasion," Thomas told WWJ's Kathryn Larson. "It appears that the father and a relative of his went to the mother's house, forced their way in, assaulted the mother, and took the child."
The suspects — Brandon Cantrell, the child's father, and Maurice Brown, his brother — were dressed in all black and armed with a hand gun, police said. They fled in a dark-colored Saturn.
Nevaeh's mother, who was pistol-whipped, was treated for minor injuries. She was taken to a local hospital where she was listed in stable condition later in the morning.
Highland Park Police Chief Kevin Coney said he could not comment as to what led them to Nevaeh's whereabouts as an investigation continues.
It was not immediately clear if Brown was also in police custody.
